Power and Performance

Power and Performance

The Toyota GR86 features an outstanding engine that significantly contributes to delivering an enjoyable and thrilling driving experience.
Under the hood, it has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine is not only powerful but also perfectly matched to the car’s lightweight, which is about 2800 lbs, giving it the ability to accelerate and move with agility and excellent responsiveness.

One of the best features of the Toyota GR86 is the fantastic handling it offers. The steering system provides excellent feedback, and when outfitted with optional high-performance summer tires, the stability and confidence in driving are equally impressive. The balance in the car is exceptional, but the stiffly tuned suspension makes driving on rough roads a bit challenging. Regarding stopping power, the GR86, which underwent a test from 60 mph, stopped in just 104 feet, a remarkably short distance for an affordable performance car.

On the Edmunds test track, the GR86 equipped with a manual transmission accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds, which is a respectable time for this class of cars. The driver feels the precision and stability of the transmission during gear changes, and the pedals are positioned ideally for heel-and-toe shifting. The clutch pedal is also light and easy to find the engagement point. Choosing the automatic transmission results in slower acceleration (6.9 seconds), but it is more comfortable in traffic. It also comes with paddle shifters and allows for quick gear changes when in the sport mode.

Fuel Efficiency

Thanks to its lightweight and relatively small engine, the Toyota GR86 offers good fuel efficiency for a sports car, with EPA estimates indicating that the car achieves 25 miles per gallon in combined driving when using the automatic transmission. We were pleasantly surprised to see it achieve 28 miles per gallon in one test. If opting for the manual transmission, EPA estimates drop to 22 miles per gallon in combined driving; 23 miles per gallon was achieved on the same route using the manual-equipped car in one test.

Interior

Interior

The interior of the Toyota GR86 allows you to focus more on driving, as the low and unobtrusive dashboard design enhances front visibility, and the digital gauge cluster is quick and easy to read. Special mention should be made of the small steering wheel in the GR86, which makes it easier for taller drivers to get in and out of the small coupe.

However, it’s important to remember that the car’s low height and long doors may make entry and exit more challenging compared to practical performance cars like the Volkswagen GTI.

The GR86’s compact dimensions do not provide ample interior space, but front-seat passengers will find it very comfortable, especially if they are taller. Taller drivers will appreciate the extra space and seat adjustments, especially compared to the tighter Miata. However, the rear seats are better used as a place for storing items rather than seating passengers.

Technology

  • The GR86 comes with a decent number of technology features. Its compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphones is standard, but there’s no native navigation system.
  • There are USB ports for fast charging in the center armrest, allowing you to store your smartphone away while driving.
  • The graphics on the central screen may not win any awards, but the system is easy to understand and responds relatively quickly to touch commands.
  • The sound system is less impressive. While this may not be a priority for a sports car, the system struggles against interior noise levels and becomes exhausting at moderate volume levels. We think there’s room for improvement in this area.
  • The GR86 comes standard with a reasonable number of advanced driver aids such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
  • The traction and stability systems in the GR86 are well-tuned for everyday driving. You can also activate a sport mode that reduces system intervention for more dynamic control of the car, or you can turn it off completely.

Space and Storage

The Toyota GR86 provides practical storage space despite its small size, with a trunk space of 6.3 cubic feet, which is relatively small and limited due to its low height.

However, when the rear seats are folded down, the car can accommodate a full set of its spare wheels and tires, making it suitable for weekend tasks. For comparison, the Miata offers 4.3 cubic feet of trunk space, while the larger Mustang offers 13.3 cubic feet.

Inside the cabin, the GR86 offers practical storage solutions despite limited space, with cup holders positioned behind the driver’s right arm to prevent collision while driving. The rear seats also serve as an ideal space for storing bags, coats, and other items you don’t want rolling around in the trunk. Additionally, the rear seats have anchor points for child seats, enhancing practicality and comfort for small families, although getting a child seat in and out may pose a challenge due to the cramped space.
